Jhalakathi, May 11, 2025, police arrested Saiful Islam Babu (40), a Yubo League leader, from the residence of Syed Zubayer, the organizational secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in Jhalakathi. The arrest took place in Rajpasha village under Jhalakathi Sadar upazila.
Saiful Islam Babu, who is the brother-in-law of former Awami League minister Amir Hossain Amu, was reportedly acting as the caretaker of Amu’s village home.
Local sources revealed that Babu frequently spent nights at Zubayer’s house following a change in government. On the night of May 10, he was staying at Zubayer’s residence when police from the Shekherhat camp detained him on the morning of May 11. He was subsequently taken to Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station and presented before a court.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Riazul Islam of Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station confirmed that Babu, the vice-president of Shekherhat Union Yubo League, was arrested in connection with an explosives case. He has been sent to court, and legal proceedings are ongoing.
