International Desk, May 12, 2025 : US President Donald Trump has claimed that the United States successfully intervened to prevent a potential nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, two rival nations in South Asia, following a terrorist attack in Pehelgam that escalated tensions in the region.
Speaking to journalists at the White House on Monday, Trump stated, “We stopped a potential nuclear conflict. If a war like that had started between India and Pakistan, it would have been catastrophic—millions of people could have died. I’m very proud that Washington was able to prevent it.”
Trump further emphasized that the US is ready to mediate between the two nations to ensure peace. He suggested that trade could be the most effective way to reduce decades-long hostilities between India and Pakistan. “Trade could be the most effective path to de-escalate tensions. I told both India and Pakistan, ‘Listen to me, we want to significantly increase trade with both of you. Stop the tensions. If you stop, we can trade; if you don’t, we won’t engage in any trade,’” he added.
The tensions stem from a terrorist attack on April 22 in Pehelgam’s Baisaran Valley, Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 tourists, mostly Hindu men, were killed by a group of terrorists using automatic rifles. The Resistance Front (TRF), a splinter group of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.
In response, India took several diplomatic measures against Pakistan, including canceling the Indus Water Treaty and visas for Pakistani citizens. Pakistan retaliated by closing its airspace to India and imposing visa restrictions. Amid rising tensions, India conducted a brief military operation named “Operation Sindur” in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, claiming to have killed 70 Pakistani terrorists, while Pakistan reported 31 deaths and 57 injuries.
Pakistan responded with its own military operation, “Operation Buniyanum Marsoos” (Arabic for “Wall of Lead”), three days later. However, under pressure from US officials, both New Delhi and Islamabad agreed to a ceasefire, which took effect on Saturday
