International Desk, May 11, 2025 : US President Donald Trump has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Istanbul on Thursday to negotiate an end to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia. In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump pressed Zelensky to engage in direct talks with Putin to halt the conflict.
In his post, Trump stated, “Russian President Vladimir Putin does not want a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine. Instead, he has expressed a desire to meet directly in Turkey on Thursday to discuss ending the bloodshed. Ukraine should immediately agree to this proposal.”
Earlier, Zelensky had demanded a 30-day ceasefire from Russia starting Monday as a precondition for any negotiations with Putin.
Trump further remarked, “A meeting in Istanbul would at least allow both sides to assess whether a deal is possible. If not, European leaders and the United States will gain clarity on the situation and can act accordingly.”
Expressing skepticism about Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate, Trump added, “I’m beginning to doubt whether Ukraine will reach an agreement with Putin. He is currently preoccupied with celebrating Russia’s victory in World War II—a victory that would not have been possible without America’s support, not at all! Meet now.”
