Dhaka, May 12, 2025 : The Election Commission (EC) of Bangladesh has suspended the registration of the Awami League as a political party. The decision was announced by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed following a commission meeting on Monday.
Ahmed stated that the decision was made in light of a notification issued by the Home Ministry. Earlier on the same day, the government issued a gazette notification banning all activities of the Awami League, its affiliated organizations, and fraternal bodies until the completion of trials at the International Crimes Tribunal.
The notification, issued by the Public Security Division (Political Branch-2) of the Home Ministry, prohibits the Awami League and its associated organizations from engaging in any form of publication, media activities, online or social media campaigns, processions, meetings, rallies, conferences, or any other activities. The order came into effect immediately.
Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasized that measures under the Anti-Terrorism Ordinance would be enforced to prevent the Awami League from conducting any political activities. He warned that law enforcement agencies would take action against anyone organizing illegal processions or programs.
The government’s decision to ban the Awami League’s activities until the conclusion of ongoing trials was initially announced on Saturday amid public protests.
