Dhaka, May 11, 2025 :Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) arrested seven members of an inter-district robbery gang in the Yatrabari area of the capital while they were preparing to rob a gold shop.
The operation led to the recovery of a foreign pistol, seven rounds of ammunition, 36 cocktails, a microbus, and a private car used for the planned heist.
In a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday (May 11), Joint Commissioner of DB, Mohammad Nasirul Islam, shared details of the operation. The arrested individuals were identified as Masud Rana Chowkidar (38), Shakil (21), Mamun (40), Md. Rabbi (26), Md. Asad Miya (45), Md. Palash Sheikh (37), and Anowar Hossen (44).
According to Mohammad Nasirul Islam, the DB intensified surveillance and analyzed technological data following a series of gold shop robberies in Dhaka and surrounding areas. Based on intelligence, they learned that a 10-12 member robbery gang, led by Anowar Hossen from Kishoreganj and Palash from Barishal, was planning to target a gold shop.
Acting on this information, a DB team conducted a raid in the Dania College area of Yatrabari on Saturday night, apprehending Masud Rana Chowkidar with a 7.62 mm foreign pistol and seven rounds of ammunition. Upon interrogation, Masud confessed to the robbery plan, leading to a subsequent raid at his residence, where 36 cocktails prepared for the heist were recovered. The explosives were safely neutralized by the Bomb Disposal Unit.
Further interrogation revealed that the gang planned to assemble near Dania College in Yatrabari to execute a robbery at New Dolly Jewelers in Boultali Bazar, Gopalganj Sadar. The DB team, with Masud in custody, waited at the location and arrested four more members—Shakil, Mamun, Md. Rabbi, and Md. Asad Miya—around 10 AM on Sunday when they arrived in a private car and a HiAce microbus. The vehicles were seized, and later, the masterminds, Md. Palash Sheikh and Anowar Hossen, were apprehended from the Dholaipar area.
Nasirul Islam stated that the arrested robbers have multiple robbery cases filed against them in various police stations across Bangladesh. Legal proceedings are underway. He added that from January to May 2025, DB has arrested 87 robbers, significantly reducing robbery incidents in the capital and nearby areas.
