Ishraq Suspends Protest, Announces 48-Hour Observation Period

Dhaka, May 22, 2025 : BNP leader Ishraq Hossain has temporarily suspended the ongoing sit-in protest in Dhaka’s Kakrail area, demanding the resignation of two advisers to the interim government. On Thursday (May 22) afternoon, he announced a 24-to-48-hour observation period at the protest site in Kakrail Mor.

Addressing the gathering, Ishraq said, “A fake writ petition was filed to obstruct my oath-taking as mayor. The dismissal of the writ by the High Court has upheld justice and the rule of law. Arrangements for my oath-taking must be made promptly. The people of Dhaka have shown their unity today, and I will remain forever grateful to them.” He added that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman expressed gratitude and appreciation to the city dwellers.
He further stated, “The movement will continue until the two student representative advisers resign. However, following the High Court’s order, the BNP has decided to suspend the protest temporarily.” Apologizing to the public for the inconvenience caused, Ishraq called on the chief adviser to appoint neutral individuals to the advisory council by removing certain members.
Earlier in the day, in a verified Facebook post, Ishraq wrote, “To the protesting brothers, I say, these tactics may tame donkeys, but not us. The fight will continue until the two student advisers resign. Don’t leave the streets; we must expand further.”
On Thursday, a High Court bench comprising Justices Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Debashish Roy Chowdhury dismissed a writ petition seeking to prevent Ishraq Hossain from taking the oath as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). This ruling cleared the legal hurdles for his oath-taking. However, his supporters vowed to remain on the streets until advisers Asif Mahmud and Mahfuz Alam resign.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, currently undergoing treatment in Bangkok, Thailand, commented over the phone, “The High Court’s verdict is a victory for the people.” He urged party activists not to block roads. Hours later, Ishraq announced the suspension of the protest but reiterated his resolve to pursue the demands.
