Narayanganj DC Sets Unprecedented Example by Issuing Licenses to 92 Contractors Without Bribes

Narayanganj, May 22, 2025 : In a groundbreaking initiative, the Narayanganj district administration has issued licenses to 92 contractors without any bribes, marking a significant milestone in promoting transparency.

The licenses were handed over by District Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia on Wednesday, May 21, at the Narayanganj District Council conference room.

Contractors expressed their appreciation for the District Commissioner’s efforts, highlighting that this was the first time they received licenses by paying only the government-prescribed fee of BDT 5,750, without any additional costs. In the past, obtaining or renewing a contractor’s license often required paying bribes ranging from BDT 15,000 to 20,000.
Md. Ali Azgar, proprietor of Messrs Ali International, shared his experience, stating, “In my 40 years as a contractor in Narayanganj, this is the first time I’ve received a license without paying a single paisa in bribes. We followed the proper process and paid only the official fee.”
Similarly, Md. Rahul Amin Dipu, proprietor of Messrs Multayam Traders, remarked, “Previously, obtaining a license involved dealing with middlemen and paying hefty bribes. Today, under the direct supervision of the District Commissioner, all 92 of us received our licenses by paying only the designated fee. This proves that a dedicated DC can foster a corruption-free society.”
In his keynote address, District Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia emphasized the importance of ensuring that public funds are utilized effectively for the welfare of the people. He urged contractors to maintain high standards in their work, stating, “Your primary responsibility is to ensure that government projects are executed properly. Just as you received licenses without bribes, our goal is to ensure you secure projects without corruption.”
He further encouraged the contractors to uphold integrity, saying, “If you work honestly and deliver quality, people will remember your contributions for a lifetime. Say no to corruption and yes to responsibility.”
The event was attended by key officials, including Acting Chief Executive Officer of the District Council Hosne Ara Begum, Additional District Administrator (General) Md. Alamgir Hossain, and other district council officials.
