International Desk, May 10, 2025: India has announced that it will not resume sharing Indus River water with Pakistan, even after a conditional ceasefire agreement was reached between the two nations.
According to a source cited by NDTV, India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and will maintain restrictions on water flow to Pakistan, alongside other measures such as visa restrictions and border closures.
The ceasefire, effective from 5 PM local time on Saturday, May 10, followed four days of drone and missile attacks between the two countries. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated in a post on X that Pakistan’s military operations chief contacted his Indian counterpart to propose the ceasefire, which India accepted. Jaishankar emphasized that India’s “uncompromising policy against terrorism” will continue.
In a press conference, India’s Ministry of External Affairs claimed that it not only thwarted three major Pakistani missile attacks but also inflicted significant damage on Pakistan’s air defense systems, weakening its ability to protect its airspace.
The ceasefire was first announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, though India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified that the agreement was reached through direct talks between India and Pakistan.
Tensions escalated after an attack on April 22 in Pehelgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 26 people were killed by gunmen. Following the incident, India canceled the 60-year-old Indus Waters Treaty, which had allowed Pakistan access to water from the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab rivers, while India controlled the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers. India has since restricted water flow to Pakistan by storing more water in hydroelectric project reservoirs in Kashmir and accelerating construction on six previously stalled projects in the region.
Pakistan warned that it would consider India’s actions to block water flow as an act of war. However, the Indian source reiterated that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty will remain in place, with the ceasefire limited to military operations.
