The authorities of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College have temporarily suspended a teacher, Fazilatun Nahar, following allegations that she expelled 22 students from class for wearing hijabs. A notice has also been issued to the teacher, asking her to explain why she should not be permanently terminated.The decision was announced in a statement issued by the school authorities on Tuesday, August 26. According to the statement, the action was taken in response to complaints that Fazilatun Nahar, an English teacher at the Bashundhara branch of the school, expelled 22 sixth-grade students from the morning shift for wearing hijabs.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, August 24, at the Bashundhara branch. Several sixth-grade students attended class wearing hijabs, and according to the allegations, Fazilatun Nahar reprimanded them, comparing their attire to that of "madrasa students" and subsequently asked them to leave the classroom. The students claimed they were treated harshly by the teacher.
Parents of the affected students stated that their daughters had gone to school wearing hijabs as usual but returned home reporting that they were expelled from class for this reason.
However, Fazilatun Nahar offered a different explanation. She denied prohibiting students from wearing hijabs and claimed she only advised them to wear them properly. She admitted to making a few students stand outside the classroom for 10-15 minutes but clarified that she did not use the term "terrorist." Instead, she said she remarked that such headscarves are typically worn by madrasa students.
Following the incident, the school authorities acted swiftly, suspending Fazilatun Nahar based on the decision of an ad hoc committee. Additionally, a show-cause notice has been issued, requiring her to respond within seven working days.
