Housewife’s Body Found Hidden in Steel Box Under Clothes and Pillows, Husband Detained in Jessore

In Bagharpara, Jessore, the body of a housewife was recovered from inside a steel box used for storing blankets and mattresses. The discovery was made on Wednesday night when police retrieved the body from a house in Ghoshnagar village, Basuari Union.

The deceased, Suchitra Debnath (58), was the wife of Tapan Debnath, a resident of Ghoshnagar village in Basuari Union. Police have detained Tapan Debnath (64) for questioning in connection with the incident. According to locals, Tapan and Suchitra Debnath had two daughters and one son, all of whom are married. Their son lives with his wife in Jessore town, while Tapan and Suchitra resided together in their home. The couple reportedly had ongoing domestic disputes. Local residents further stated that Suchitra was last seen on Wednesday morning. Later that day, Tapan Debnath left for Jessore town. Upon returning in the afternoon and failing to find his wife, he began searching the area with the help of neighbors. Eventually, he opened a steel box inside their tin-roofed house and found Suchitra’s body inside, concealed under clothes and pillows with her knees bent. He then informed the police. Police arrived at the scene around 9 PM and recovered the body by 10 PM, taking it to Bagharpara Police Station. Police observed signs of injury on Suchitra’s head and a slight cut on her lip, suggesting she may have been killed by a blow to the head. The body was likely hidden in the steel box, covered with clothes and pillows, to conceal the crime. Bagharpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Fakir Taijur Rahman stated that the body has been sent to the morgue at Jessore 250-Bed General Hospital for an autopsy. He noted that the couple frequently had domestic disputes. Preliminary investigations suggest Tapan Debnath may have killed his wife by striking her head and then concealed the body in the box. He is currently under detention and being interrogated.
