Dhaka, June 26, 2025: The interim government of Bangladesh has renamed approximately 1,000 infrastructures, establishments, and institutions previously named after ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family, and Awami League politicians. This was confirmed by Suchismita Tithi, Assistant Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, on Thursday (June 26).
Suchismita Tithi stated that the government has changed the names of 977 infrastructures and institutions established or named during the tenure of the previous Awami League government. These include military barracks, airbases, naval vessels, mega bridges, roads, schools, colleges, universities, hospitals, and research centers, among others. She added that the majority of these institutions have already had their names changed, while the renaming process for the remaining ones is underway.
Meanwhile, the 101st Syndicate meeting of Jagannath University (JnU) decided to rename its sole female student dormitory. The hall, previously named ‘Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall,’ has now been renamed ‘Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani Hall.’ This decision was announced in a notice signed by the university’s Registrar, Professor Dr. Md. Sheikh Gias Uddin, on Tuesday.
This renaming initiative is seen as a significant step by the interim government, reflecting a new approach to naming the country’s infrastructures and institutions.
