Dhaka, June 9, 2025: Former President Abdul Hamid returned to Bangladesh late Sunday night at around 1:30 AM aboard a Thai Airways flight (TG-339). Upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, he was brought from the aircraft to the immigration counter in a wheelchair, wearing a shirt and lungi. The airport’s Executive Director, Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, confirmed his return.
According to airport sources, Abdul Hamid reached the immigration counter at 1:45 AM. However, as of 2:25 AM, his immigration process remained incomplete, and he was waiting in a wheelchair.
Earlier, on May 8, 2024, he had left Dhaka for medical treatment in Bangkok via Thai Airways. A murder case was filed against him on January 14, 2025, at Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station, which also named former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other leaders. His departure from the country triggered widespread criticism nationwide.
Following his departure, three police officers faced disciplinary action for alleged negligence of duty. They were Additional Superintendent of Police (Immigration) Tahsina Arif, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Azharul Islam, the investigating officer of the case, and ATSI Mohammad Solaiman of the Special Branch.
Abdul Hamid assumed the role of Acting President in 2013 and was elected as the 20th President of Bangladesh later that year. He served a second term in 2018 and completed his tenure on April 24, 2023.
