Dhaka, May 22, 2025: Despite heavy rain, leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), have blocked Shahbag intersection in the capital for the third consecutive day. The protest is in response to the killing of Shahriar Alam Samy, a Dhaka University (DU) student and Chhatra Dal leader, with demands for the swift arrest and trial of those involved.
On Thursday (May 22), Chhatra Dal activists took position at Shahbag intersection around 10 AM, causing severe traffic congestion in and around the area. The protesters gathered in small processions during the blockade. Key figures present included Chhatra Dal central president Md. Rakibul Islam Rakib, DU Chhatra Dal president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas, general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon, and leaders from various levels of the organization.
During the protest, they chanted slogans such as, “My brother is in the grave, why are the killers free?”, “We demand justice, justice for Samy’s killing,” “One point, one demand: VC’s resignation,” and “VC and proctor’s many talents, two murders in nine months.”
The activists began gathering at Shahbag from 9:30 AM. According to a press release issued by the organization on Wednesday, the blockade is scheduled to continue until 5 PM today.
